Doug Hattler, chief revenue officer of 374Water, says the company's system works by mixing a slurry of water and contaminants with hot air in a high-pressure reaction chamber.
At temperatures above 374°C (705°F), the suspension reaches the "supercritical" state, where it behaves as both a liquid and a gas. This technique is called supercritical water oxidation or SCWO. PFAS contamination is particularly high on US military bases, where PFAS-containing foams are widely used for firefighting.
The US Department of Defense (DOD) has committed billions of dollars to finding alternatives to Styrofoam, as well as developing better ways to destroy PFAS to prevent the chemicals from ending up in landfills, where they can leach back into soil and water.

"The water separates," says Igor Novosilov of the University of Washington in Seattle. It mixes with air, forming free molecules containing hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. These molecules can then break the carbon-fluorine bonds that make PFAS so strong.
"[The camera] is a very aggressive environment," he says. A small system uses 300 kilowatt-hours of electricity per day, but Hattler says a larger system can generate 300 kilowatt-hours per day by recycling the heat generated by breaking down waste.
